Elaine Howard Ecklund is the Autrey Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at the Rice University Department of Sociology, director of the Religion and Public Life Program in Rice's Social Science Research Institute, director of the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance, and a Rice Scholar at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. Ecklund received a B.S. in Human Development and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Cornell University. Her research focuses on institutional change in the areas of religion, immigration, science, medicine, and gender. She has authored numerous research articles, as well as two books with Oxford University Press.

Laura S. Achenbaum, a magna cum laude graduate of New York University (B.A.), earned an M.A. in sociology from the University of Houston in 2010 and has published on research ethics. A former Research Assistant at Baylor College of Medicine, Achenbaum has extensive experience managing every stage of qualitative research projects.

Sarah Hamshari
Project Manager

Sarah Hamshari is Research Project Manager for Religion Among Scientists in International Contexts (RASIC), which is an eight country study examining how physicists and biologists in these countries view the relationship between science and religion. Sarah is well suited to work closely on a study with an international scope, as she has lived outside of the U.S. for much of her life. Sarah received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a Master's degree in Global Policy Studies from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

Hayley Hemstreet
Program Manager and Faculty Representative

Hayley Hemstreet is Program Manager of RPLP and Faculty Representative. Her role at RPLP involves managing day-to-day operations and coordinating program events. Her Faculty Representative work is assisting Prof. Ecklund in her roles as Director of the program and Autrey Professor of Sociology. Hayley is a recent Rice University graduate, having completed a dual major in History and Environmental Science.

Shelby Allen
Research Assistant

Shelby Allen graduated summa cum laude from George Mason University in 2013 with a B.A. in Art History and minor in Economics. She is currently Research Assistant to three research projects: Religious Understandings of Science, Religion among Scientists in International Context, and Ethics among Scientists in International Context. Before moving to Houston and joining the RPLP team, she worked with the South and Southeast Asian curatorial department of the Smithsonian Freer Sackler Galleries.
