David R. Johnson

David R. Johnson is an associate professor of educational policy studies at Georgia State University. Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia State University, he was an RPLP postdoctoral fellow from 2012 to 2015. He completed his doctoral training in sociology at the University of Georgia. David is the author of A Fractured Profession: Commercialism and Conflict in Academic Science (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2017). His scholarship can also be found in top social science journals such as The Journal of Higher Education, Social Forces, Sociological Science, Public Understanding of Science, and Science, Technology, and Human Values.

David is a co-PI for the RPLP's current project, "Communicating Outlooks for a New Global Religion and Science Synergy: The Engagement Challenge."

How Thinking About Religion Can Increase Racial and Gender Diversity in Science (2021 AAAS Annual Meeting)

There is a national, even international, effort to diversify the scientific workforce. Women and minorities, especially Black and Hispanic Americans, are massively underrepresented in science. They are also much more likely than other groups to be religious. Many Americans assume that scientists are hostile toward religion, in part because highly vocal atheist scientists in the public sphere perpetuate this view, which hurts access to science for Black and Hispanic Americans in particular.

Presidential Theme Session on Diversifying the Study of Religion and Science Through Global Perspectives (Society for the Scientific Study of Religion 2019 Annual Meeting)

Researchers who examine the religion and science interface have, until recently, been primarily concerned with the relationship of specific forms of Christianity to particular forms of science in the US. This session focused on diversifying the study of religion and science by bringing global research to the table.

Varieties of Atheism in Science

In this lecture, the authors of Varieties of Atheism in Science (Oxford University Press 2021) presented core findings from a survey of over 1,200 atheist scientists in the US and the UK and 81 in-depth interviews. They explored what everyday atheist scientists think about religion and the limits to what science can explain, atheist scientists’ views on meaning and morality, pathways that led to atheism in science, and more.

What Scientists Around the World Really Think About Religion and Why It Matters

In this event, Elaine Howard Ecklund and David R. Johnson presented core findings from the largest and most comprehensive international study of scientists’ attitudes toward religion, gender, and ethics ever undertaken, including a survey of 20,000 scientists and in-depth interviews with over 600 of them. They explored the nuances of what scientists think about ethics, religion, and spirituality as well as opportunities for scientific and religious communities to better understand and appreciate each other.
